COVID-19 Information for Schools

Covid-19 and School Visits to Peterborough Museum

Various times available

Overview

It’s important that schools feel comfortable when visiting and that we can safely accommodate you. The visiting experience will be very different so it’s really important that we speak with you about your needs before you book. This is a learning curve for all of us and we want to make it work in the best possible way for your class.

We are able to accommodate school groups booked onto one of our facilitated sessions.

Unfortunately, due to capacity, we are unable to accommodate school groups wishing to visit independently until further notice.

You are still very welcome to visit during the Covid-19 pandemic on one of our facilitated sessions, although please be aware that we have to prioritise the safety of all visitors. The following special conditions have been implemented;

  • There is a one-way system of the museum and reduced capacity in galleries – all clearly communicated with signage throughout.
  • We have reduced capacity to no more than 2 classes. Some sessions have a capacity of just one class. This will be clearly stated on the website and session information. Or please contact schools@cityculturepeterborough.org.uk if it is not clear.
  • Facilitated school sessions have been adapted and you will be advised on these changes through separate teachers’ notes beforehand
  • Parking for minibuses is seriously restricted due to on-going building work at the museum. Please discuss needs with us with plenty of notice
  • School risk assessments have been revised and will be sent to you at time of booking
  • Visits to the museum shop are not possible. Goodie bags ready for collection on the day can be pre-ordered at least 2 weeks before visit.
Visit Details
  • Facilitated, booked visit
  • Outreach – us visiting you at your school

We anticipate less schools will wish to make trips out this academic year or will not be inviting as many visitors into their schools, but you are still very welcome to book a visit to Peterborough Museum or an outreach session at your school.  The visit will be slightly different from normal as we all prioritise safety at this time.

Visits to the museum

You will need to follow the one-way systemfollowing arrows on the floor

Unfortunately, this means that you will not be able to wander the galleries as you would normally expect to do.  As the museum will be open to the general public, we need to use a system which keeps everyone safe.  You can visit in your class bubbles and we will book you in to keep your group separated from public visits as much as possibleAll visits must be booked through the museum learning team (schools@cityculturepeterborough.org.uk).

Spaces have reduced capacity to allow for social distancing

You will see signs around the museum stating capacity for spaces such as stairs and galleries.

Stairs: You will see signs saying, ‘Only 1 family/person at a time’.  One class or bubble is counted the same as one family. Before using the stairs, check that no other person/family is using that flight. If they are, then waitkeeping as one group and ensuring social distancing to others who might also be waiting or moving pass

GalleriesAt the entrance of each gallery, you will see a sign stating the maximum capacity for that space.

Facilitated visits – we will ensure the gallery needed for your facilitated visit is booked exclusively for you, for the time stated on your timetable on the booking form. This means that no members of the public will be sharing the space with you for that set time. If your visit includes an independent look around the museum, please adhere to the following guidelines:

Independent visits – Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate school groups wishing to visit the museum independently until further notice. This is due to capacity. Please contact schools@cityculturepeterborough.org.uk if you have any questions regarding this.

The Victorian Operating Theatre has a stated capacity of 1 person/family at a time.  For a pre-booked facilitated school session in this space with a member of the education teamwe will be exempt from this rule due to additional measures in place – removing barriers to increase size of space to allow for activity and social distancing between member of staff and school group ‘family’ and windows opened to allow for ventilation. For independent visits, the rule of ‘1 person/family’ applies. As the space with barriers is tight, we recommend that a ‘family’ size is up to 6 persons – so visit independently in small groups with an adult.

Safety

Following government guidance, any visitors over the age of 11 who do not have a reason to be exempted will need to wear a facemask when visiting the museum - this includes adults visiting with children under 11.  We have hand sanitising and hand washing facilities in the building but would also recommend that you implement your own hand sanitising regime in line with your school risk assessment.

We can’t wait to see you, but if anyone in your group is feeling unwell, we kindly ask that they stay at home. Before your visit, you are welcome to contact us to check for the latest updates and information. If your session is affected due to a member of staff being ill, then we will contact you immediately to cancel or rearrange.

  • Please follow the signs and information around the museum.
  • For social distancing, please ensure you and your pupils stay two metres apart from museum staff and other visitors.
  • Handwashing facilities and hand sanitiser stations are located throughout the museum, please use them regularly during your visit.
  • Enhanced cleaning regimes have been introduced site wide.
  • It is possible to pre-order shop items for the pupils in your group when you make your booking, these can be added to your invoice.
  • Please wear a face covering in all our indoor spaces as specified in government rules.
