Local History

Local History

Our Local Studies Collection contains a variety of resources collected over decades detailing the past and present of Peterborough. Many of these resources are available self-service within our searchroom. Within the collection we hold a vast array of local interest books, some of which are available to loan, others are reference only to be viewed on site. In the first instance, check the library catalogue, but speak to a member of archive staff if you cannot find what you are looking for as not everything is on the library catalogue.

The collection also contains photographs, maps, directories and newspapers. See below for further information on some resources.

Can’t make it to the archives? Let us do your research for you!

We hold local newspapers on mircofilm for the following titles and dates:

  • The Peterborough Advertiser (1854-1989)
  • The Peterborough Citizen (1903-1946)
  • Peterborough Evening News (1896, 1899-1909, 1911)
  • Peterborough Evening Telegraph (1960-present)
  • Peterborough Express (1884-1917)
  • Peterborough Standard (1872-1989)

These are available self-service, though we recommend booking an appointment if you require a reader that can print. It is also best to book during staffed opening times if you require help with the machines.
