General Purpose

To assist in the day-to-day operation and delivery of library services providing high quality customer service to all adults and children using the service during staffed and unstaffed hours.

Key Deliverables

To welcome and greet members of the public and to actively promote the independent use of the library service

To assist customers in the use of self - service technology and electronic resources

To oversee the use of the library service during unstaffed hours reporting and / or addressing issues as required

To assist in creating a customer-friendly and easy-to-use library environment including shelving and shelf tidying

To signpost customers to when and where library staff support is available

To assist in the promotion of reading

To support volunteers working in the service 

To achieve service and personal appraisal targets 

To be committed to the self development and training required to deliver the range of services relating to the post 

To take responsibility for continuously trying to improve the overall performance of the service 

To promote social inclusion in all aspects of service delivery


Working in libraries or customer related environment 

Using own initiative 

Experience in addressing challenging situations in an appropriate manner 

Using Microsoft Office and Internet

Working with a diverse range of users

4 GCSE’s including English and Maths at grade B or above or equivalent

Good interpersonal skills including an ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public

Ability to deal with challenging situations in an appropriate manner

Self-motivated, flexible, and adaptable

Able to present positive “can do” customer focussed approach

Able to explain things simply to others

Able to lift and carry stocks of books and other materials to carry out role

Must be prepared to work at or to be relocated to other Peterborough city libraries when required

This post is line managed by a Supervisor. The primary role of this post is to oversee the use of the library during unstaffed hours.

Although this post is allocated to a particular library, the post holder may be expected to work at any other ‘Cultural’ site across the city to ensure customer service needs are met at all times.
