The City Gallery hosts an exciting programme of changing temporary exhibitions from local to internationally renowned artists.
4 - 8 April 2018
Object Lesson is the culmination of a series of sculpture workshops undertaken by 11 art students from Peterborough Regional College. The project is just one strand of an awareness raising campaign to highlight the internationally significant sculpture collection in the city and to coincide with the restoration and re-siting of Antony Gormley's Places to Be within the city centre.
The students took part in a series of challenges led by Curator and Educator, Liz Falconbridge where they engaged in activities individually, in groups and in pairs and experimented with minimal, low cost materials creating meaningful, modest, yet thought-provoking pieces.
A intensive 4-day residency with London-based sculptor, Alex Devereux followed this, during which the students tackled work on a much larger scale, learning new skills involved with carving techniques and surface finishes for polystyrene. Their resulting pieces demonstrate the range and scope of their ideas from figurative to formal, to socio-political as well as their dedication to the cause of completing work to exhibition standard.
This initiative has been devised and funded by Vivacity with generous support from the Wyss Foundation.
