Overview

Against his Russian boyfriend Steve’s advice, ambitious British journalist Adam goes to Chechnya to
report on the state-sanctioned anti-gay purges there. The purges have had little mainstream media
attention and so Adam hopes that in covering the story, he will encourage his boss, media mogul and
king of spin RuPert, to promote him to editor on one of his tabloids.

But when Adam and Steve arrive in Chechnya, Steve is kidnapped by Chechen leader Ramzan
Kadyrov and detained in a secret state-sanctioned concentration camp for gay men. In a race against
time, Adam must work with Chechnya’s underground LGBTQ network to convince RuPert to report
on the purges in order to help them find the camps, free Steve and defeat Ramzan.

Through drama, dance, song, smut and queer cabaret, CAMP! aims to help audiences become aware
of the purges and better understand and reassess how they perceive gay life, the misrepresentation of
those who hegemony deem as ‘other’, hidden homophobia in liberal societies, state sanctioned
genocide and the abuse of national press and political power, themes which in this political climate
have never felt more urgent or necessary to assert and interrogate.

CAMP! is presented as a cabaret play to reflect through form and encourage audiences to reflect
upon how serious queer-related news is often treated frivolously in the press, how mainstream culture
turns atrocity into entertainment and how the media hasn’t made a song and dance about the
emergence of these anti-gay purges.

As CAMP! explores the emergence of anti-gay purges in Chechnya, the primary target audience for
the show is the LGBTQ community and politically engaged audiences. As CAMP! explores this theme
through the forms of comedy, political theatre, music and cabaret, another of CAMP’s primary target
audiences are comedy, political theatre, music and cabaret fans.
