Overview

As part of a guided tour pupils will explore the Priestgate Vaults - the cellars underneath Peterborough Museum- and hear stories from the ghosts of the building's past.

In each room you will meet a character who would have used this space, brought to life as an apparition from the past… The tour will first start upstairs, in the museum building, where pupils will be introduced to the characters they will meet downstairs in the cellar.

Upstairs, Downstairs

The class is split in half, so that whilst one group is having a cellar tour, the other half are independently
looking around the museum with a Priestgate Vaults trail. This trail complements the cellar tour. Pupils can also further explore the historical periods through additional museum-led workshops/activities upstairs in the main museum.

Meet the past inhabitants of the museum's building

Learn the history of the building firsthand from the people who lived in it.

  • Sir Humphrey Orme
    • A leading local Royalist during the English Civil War who lived in the original Tudor building 'Neville Place' before it was rebuilt in 1815. You meet Sir Humphrey in 1641 in his Tudor Home.
  • John Webb
    • The butler to Magistrate Thomas Alderson Cooke, you meet John in the wine cellar in 1841 as he helps prepare for a dinner party.
  • Nurse Ethel Reynolds
    • Working long shifts in Peterborough Infirmary at a time of great medical advancement, you meet Nurse Ethel in the coal cellar as she collects fuel for the fires upstairs.
  • Abigail Winter
    • A fictionalised character based on a real family who lived in the Museum during World War Two, you meet Abigail on 10 May 1941 as she takes cover from the Luftwaffe during 'The Hardest Night of the Blitz'. Pupils will experience the sights, sounds and even the shakes of WWII air raid
