Located in one of the city’s most historic buildings, Peterborough Museum has a wealth of stories to fascinate and enthrall the whole family.

With amazing objects and interactive displays for all ages, the collections comprise over 200,000 items of great national and international importance.

Peterborough Museum is situated in Peterborough City Centre, on Priestgate, a minute’s walk from the main shopping areas and two minutes’ walk from the Queensgate Shopping Centre, the Bus Station or the Railway Station.

The city of Peterborough is conveniently located just off the A1, and is on the main East Coast railway line, less than an hour’s journey from London.

There is no public parking at the Museum; for access information, please see below.

There are plenty of places to park in the City Centre and the most convenient ones for the Museum are the Trinity Street Car Park (evenings and weekends only), or Car Haven on Bishop’s Road. For a full list of car parks in the City Centre managed by Peterborough City Council, click here.

Access Information

There is one disabled parking space available at the museum; if you would like to use this, please let us know in advance so that we can reserve it.

There is lift access available to all galleries, except the Victorian Operating Theatre. There is a 3D representation of the Operating Theatre on the interactive table in our History of the Building gallery. If you have other access requirements, please contact us prior to your visit and we will endeavour to meet your needs.

Tuesday-Sunday: 10am-5pm
Mondays in school terms: CLOSED
Mondays in school holidays & Bank Holidays: 10am-5pm

The Museum is closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Admission Prices

Entry to Peterborough Museum is free, and donations are gratefully received to help support our work.

Admission prices to the museum apply on special event days (as activities are spread across our galleries) - please see our What's On pages more information on all our events. All special event day times are 10am-3pm (recommended last entry is 2pm); entry to the museum is free again after 3pm.

Dates of upcoming chargeable event days are:

  • Space Chase - 30 & 31 July, 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28 August 2019
  • Treasure Hunt (details to be released soon) - 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 October 2019

We offer guided tours of Peterborough Museum for individuals or groups, subject to availability.

About the tours
Tours last about 90 minutes and cover the major items on display, the history of the museum building and can sometimes include a look behind the scenes.

Exclusive use
Groups can book to visit the Museum in the evenings to explore the galleries exclusively or to have a guided tour. We can also organise refreshments for groups via Squires Coffee House by prior arrangement, subject to availability. If you're looking for something a little special, we can also create bespoke events for groups, so please contact us to discuss your needs.

Please note that while there is no minimum number needed to book a guided tour, there is a minimum charge.

To ensure we are able to meet your requirements, we kindly ask that private tour enquiries are made at least 3 weeks in advance of the proposed visit. If you would like to visit within this timeframe, it would be best to contact us via phone on 01733 864 663 to enquire about short-term availability. 

Whether you’re visiting the museum or just fancy a break, Squire’s Coffee House is the place to visit.

Set in a beautiful and relaxed environment on the ground floor of the museum, the Coffee House is a great destination for anyone in need of a break and something to eat and drink.

With great tasting coffee and speciality tea bags, delicious homemade cakes and sandwiches, all available to eat in or take-away, Squire’s is the perfect place to take a break from shopping or work, or after a tour of the museum’s collections and galleries.
